If you only have 2 days in Rome, here is a perfect itinerary to help you make the most of your time:

Day 1 of your Rome itinerary

Morning:

Start your day by visiting the Colosseum. This iconic amphitheater is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Rome. You can take a guided tour to learn about its history and see the gladiatorial arena up close.

Afterward, grab lunch and a drink at La Biga Ristoracaffe.

Afternoon:

After the Colosseum, walk to Piazza Venezia. This large square is dominated by the Victor Emmanuel II Monument, a towering white building that commemorates the unification of Italy.

Evening:

In the evening, visit Piazza Navona. This lively square is home to three beautiful fountains, including the Fountain of the Four Rivers.

Afterward, enjoy a traditional Italian dinner by the Pantheon. This ancient temple was built in the 2nd century AD and is one of the best-preserved buildings in Rome. You can admire its beautiful dome and intricate architecture while eating delicious pasta and a refreshing Birra Moretti beer.

Day 2 of your Rome itinerary

Morning:

Start your day by visiting Vatican City. Vatican City is the smallest country in the world, with an area of just .17 square miles. It is located within the city of Rome, Italy, and is the seat of the Roman Catholic Church. The best time to arrive is around 7 – 8 a.m. before all the group tours arrive and the lines get super long!

The Vatican City is home to many important religious and cultural sites, including St. Peter’s Basilica, the Vatican Museums, and the Sistine Chapel (famous for its ceiling, which was painted by Michelangelo). And I recommend visiting them all.

P.S. You don’t need your passport to enter Vatican City. 

Afternoon:

After visiting Vatican City, grab lunch at La Soffitta Renovatio. Their gluten-free pizzas and pasta are to die for!

Afterward, walk to the Trevi Fountain. This famous fountain is a popular spot for tourists to toss a coin into the water for good luck. Legend also says that if you toss a coin into the water you are guaranteed to return to Rome someday.

Evening:

In the evening, walk to the Spanish Steps in Piazza di Spagna. This iconic staircase is a popular spot for people-watching and enjoying the views of the city. And at the end of the steps, walk around Via dei Condotti, home to some of the most luxurious shops in the world, before grabbing dinner.

• The best time to visit Rome is during the spring or fall, when the weather is mild.

• The city is very walkable, so you can get around easily without a car.

• You could also buy a Hop On Hop Off bus ticket and see lots of the major touristy attractions.

• Rome is a very safe city, but it’s always a good idea to be aware of your surroundings and take precautions against petty theft.

• Don’t forget to indulge in a gelato cone or two!
